Frequently Asked Questions

Are your eye doctors able to provide a comprehensive eye exam for a child who has autism and is non-verbal?

Yes. All of the doctors at The Solution Center are experienced and skilled in providing eye exams to children (those who have autism and those who don’t) who are non-verbal. We utilize specialized techniques and equipment to help us obtain a full understanding of your child’s eye health and vision.

Is it really possible for my infant or toddler to have a comprehensive eye exam? How can the doctor tell what my child is seeing—before she can even talk?

At The Solution Center, our eye exams are specifically designed for children at each age and developmental level. We use specially designed equipment and procedures to evaluate your child’s eyesight, eye coordination, depth perception, whether they are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism, visual development and overall eye health. Our passion is children’s vision care.

Recently, my preschooler has been bumping into things around the house. Could she have poor depth perception? Can an optometrist check for depth perception?

The eye doctors at The Solution Center can detect deficiencies in depth perception through a comprehensive eye exam and these deficiencies can often be corrected through vision therapy. If you suspect that your child is having any problems with his/her vision, please contact our office and schedule an appointment with a doctor.

My 7 year-old son is having trouble with reading. I have also noticed that he frequently reverses letters and numbers when he is writing. Could he have dyslexia?

While it is not uncommon for a child in preschool or even elementary school to reverse numbers/ letters. However, it is something you should have checked by an pediatric optometrist. Visual disorders such as saccadic eye movement disorders, problems with eye tracking, poor visual perception and visual processing disorders may cause difficulty with reading and other school subjects. While some visual conditions require eye glasses, many of these problems can be corrected through targeted vision therapy. If you or your child’s teacher are noticing these types of problems, please contact our office to schedule a comprehensive vision exam for your child.

My daughter was recently diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. Does she need more frequent eye exams or special vision care because she is diabetic?

Yes, juvenile diabetes may cause specific visual problems. When blood sugar fluctuates, the amount of farsightedness and nearsightedness fluctuates. This may require different glasses prescriptions depending on the blood sugar level that day. In addition, a child with diabetes may experience leakage of the blood vessels in the retina, in the back of the eye. A child with diabetes must have a dilated eye examination regularly to ensure no damage is occurring to the retina.

My son has autism. I have taken him to another eye doctor but the other doctor was unable to examine him. How are eye exams at The Solution Center different?

We welcome children with autism. Our doctors and staff have been specially trained to work with children with autism. We use special techniques to perform comprehensive eye exams on patients who, in other settings, are not so agreeable to eye exams.

I have heard that vision therapy can help correct messy handwriting. Is this true?

Messy handwriting is often a sign of a vision disorder that affects the way the eyes work together, such as convergence excess, convergence insufficiency, or strabismus. These conditions respond well to vision therapy. If your child’s handwriting is noticeably messier than his/her peers, contact The Solution Center for an evaluation with an eye doctor.

My son had a vision screening at school. Does he need to see an eye doctor, too?

Yes. It is very important to your child’s well-being that he/she be seen by an optometrist for a comprehensive vision exam. The eye screening that children receive at school and at the pediatrician’s office only screens how well a child can see at a distance.

Over 10 million children in the United States suffer from undetected vision problems. These vision problems often contribute to difficulties in the classroom, even in students who score 20/20 vision in a vision screening.

In addition, there are many serious health problems such as retinal detachment, cataracts, diabetes, and retinal cancer, which can only be detected only through a comprehensive eye exam with an eye doctor such as an optometrist at The Solution Center.

My daughter has one eye that seems to drift outward sometimes. Will this correct itself?

It sounds like your daughter could have strabismus. The eye doctors at The Solution Center are experienced in diagnosing and treating children with strabismus. Unfortunately, children do not outgrow this disorder. However, strabismus can usually be corrected through vision therapy and does not require surgical intervention when caught early. If you suspect that your child or loved one has strabismus, please contact our office to schedule a comprehensive eye exam with one of our eye doctors.

My son becomes tired easily and frequently loses his place when reading. What should we do?
